Goodnight Saigon honored as the Outstanding General Nonfiction Book
for 2006 by the American Society of Journalists and Authors
(Goodnight Saigon was published January 4, 2005 by Penguin
Group (USA), as a Berkley-Caliber hardcover book and is available
worldwide in most bookstores.)
July 18, 2006, Colorado Springs, CO – The American Society
of Journalists and Authors recently named Goodnight Saigon,
Charles Henderson’s fourth book about the Vietnam War, as their
choice for the best general nonfiction book published in 2005,
honoring it with their national book award as the Outstanding
General Nonfiction Book for 2006. http://www.asja.org/awards/awar2006.php
Henderson accepted the book of the year award at ceremonies in New
York on April 28, 2006, as part of the American Society of
Journalists and Authors annual national writers’ conference.
In 1994, Henderson returned to Vietnam with friend and TIME
Magazine photographer, Dirck Halstead, and together the team
retraced all the major battle sites of the Vietnam War's final
campaign that led to the Communist victory. In their journey, the
two journalists interviewed and videotaped not only the leaders of
both sides of the conflict, but the soldiers who fought on the front
lines. These interviews included such notable people as President
Gerald R. Ford, and the Commander-in-Chief of the Viet Cong, General
Tran Van Tra. It is from the interviews of these men and women,
civilians, journalists, front-line soldiers and political and
military leaders that Henderson captures for the reader the sense of
being there during the war's final days and hours.
As in his other works, Henderson writes Goodnight Saigon
with vivid characterizations of the people appearing in the book,
visually setting the scenes so readers can see the tale unfold, and
letting dialogue and action speak, rather than simply telling the
story. Goodnight Saigon, along with Henderson's three other
published Vietnam War classics, Marine Sniper,
Marshalling the Faithful, and Silent Warrior, are all
four available in most leading bookstores throughout the United
States, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, India and
other English-speaking countries. Marshalling the Faithful
is available in a new, trade paperback edition, published June 27,
as well. Goodnight Saigon will be available in
paperback editions in the fall.
Henderson’s newest work, Jungle Rules, a dark comedy, based
on true stories, about lawyers in Da Nang in 1968 and some of their
colorful clientele, will be published in hardcover by
Berkley-Caliber, a division of Penguin Group (USA), on November 7,
2006, in conjunction with this year’s November 10, Marine Corps
Birthday celebrations.
Charles W. Henderson, known to many of his friends as "Bill," served
